The Golden Treasure of Košice
The treasure of Košice as a collective finding of the old golden coins belongs among the largest ones of the world. Its importance is multiplied by the fact that in spite of different complications it hasn't been overtaken by the destiny of other big treasures that have been repeatedly re-coined.
The coins that it contains, create a wide range of the acunation produced by 81 european mints of 15th - 17th century. The chromatic destiny of this treasure has begun markedly in the time of its secretion, what according to the era of the youngest coin stamped in Kremnica in a year 1679 can be dated approximately to the years 1680 - 1682, when Košice standing on the side of the emperor, was in a year 1682 occupied by the leader of anti-habsburg rebellion - Imrich Thököli.
As in other cases, also here the reason was a scare about the property in the uncertain military-political situation. Content of the treasure indicates that the primary owner was the emporer's sympathiser (missing Michal Apafi's coinage from Sedmohradsko who arrived to help Thököli in a year 1681 as well as the coinage of the french monarch Ľudovít XIV. who had the interest to encourage the rebels) and very rich person, a specialist in a finance matters.
17th century was the period of the economic colapse caused by the 30-years' war, anti-turkish wars, as well as the actions of rebellious princes of Sedmohradsko. Former owner of the treasure probably hasn't trusted in existing currency represented by big silver coin - taler, and its own, no small property invested into a golden, by the time checked coin, even into the safest one, e.g. Netherland's coin, that was already about 100 year stamped from the gold of the American continent.
After approximately 250 years of the rest under the pavement of the house cellar on Main Street No. 68, exactly on August 24th, 1935 when the workers of the A. Novák's building company of Košice were digging the foundations of a new building of the finance head office, the treasure has really stunned its finders. They wanted to appropriate illegaly a part of the treasure, thereby they got rid themselves of the claim for the reward what at that time denoted approximately 1/3 of the finding value.
What does the treasure cosist of:
It includes the complex of 2920 pcs of golden coins, mostly ducates, double-ducates, three golden medals and a golden renaissance chain. The box that was the shelter of this unique treasure, is a copper, round, with the shape of two meshed together bowls, on its cover it is ornated with the engraved decoration of the hunting scene. The golden renaissance chain 2,14 m long with the weight of 590 grams consists of the oval links, which both sides are longitudinal split by two grooves.
Medals come from the mint of Kremnica. The first one is a work of some unknown master for the king Ľudovít from a year 1525, the second one for the king Ferdinand I. from a year 1541 is a work of Krištof Füssl and the third one for the king Ľudovít II. is also attributed to K. Füssl.
Dominating part of the treasure is created by the coins. Except one piece of the antique Tracia coin, the late stater of Lysimach (323 - 281 BCE) or its perfect Celtic imitation, that with its time classification doesn't fit into the complex ilustrating nearly three centuries of the european acunation, the finding can be divided into three basic circuits:
1. Ugria and Sedmohradsko (Transylvania)
2. The Netherlands (provinces and cities)
3. Other european countries: Bohemia, Silesia, Austria, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Italy, Spain.
